Frequently Asked Questions
What's your experience as an editor?
I'm a new editor who's passionate about helping romance authors polish their manuscripts. While I don't have years of professional editing experience yet, I bring a strong foundation in grammar from my Catholic High School education and a Music Education Degree that honed my attention to detail and structure. Because you're taking a chance on me as I build my portfolio, I offer discounted rates for first-time clients.
What genres do you work with?
I specialize in romance and all its subgenres - contemporary, historical, paranormal, romantic suspense, fantasy romance, and more. My love of reading in this genre helps me understand the conventions and reader expectations. No romance plot is too small! If your book is really a fantasy, sci-fi, or other genre with even a minor romantic element, I'm happy to edit it.
What services do you offer?
I provide four main services:
Proofreading - Final polish for grammar, spelling, punctuation, and typos
Line editing - Sentence-level improvements for flow, clarity, and readability
Developmental editing - A deep, collaborative edit focused on strengthening your story’s structure, pacing, character development, and overall narrative flow.
Manuscript Review - A high-level evaluation of your manuscript with actionable feedback on what’s working, what needs improvement, and where to focus your revisions.
What style guide do you follow?
I work with the Chicago Manual of Style, which is the industry standard for fiction. That said, I believe rules are made to be broken - if breaking a "rule" makes your prose flow better or sound more natural, I'm all for it. Good writing sometimes means knowing when to bend the guidelines.
What's your turnaround time?
Proofreading: approximately 1–2 weeks, depending on manuscript length
Line editing: approximately 3–4 weeks, depending on manuscript length and depth of edits
Developmental editing: approximately 4–6 weeks, depending on manuscript complexity
Manuscript review: turnaround varies by manuscript length; most reviews are completed within 2–4 weeks
What software do you use?
I work in Microsoft Word or Google Docs, whichever you prefer. I use the comment and suggestion features so you can easily see all my edits and suggestions. If you prefer a different platform, I’m open to learning new software, and this can be discussed on a case-by-case basis.
What is your AI policy?
I believe editing is a collaborative, human-centered process. All editing and proofreading services are completed manually without the use of AI-generated editing tools. To maintain the integrity of that process, I do not accept manuscripts generated wholly or substantially by artificial intelligence.
How do you preserve my author voice?
This is extremely important to me! I make suggested edits rather than direct changes, so you maintain complete control over your manuscript. My goal is to enhance clarity and correctness while keeping your unique style and voice intact. You'll approve all changes before they're implemented.
What's your revision policy?
After you receive your edited manuscript, I include one round of revisions within two weeks if you have questions about specific edits or need clarification on suggestions. Additional revision rounds can be discussed on a case-by-case basis.
How do you handle communication?
I'm flexible and happy to communicate however you prefer - email, messaging platforms, or phone calls. I do a check-in when I'm about halfway through your manuscript to see if you have any questions or concerns about the editing approach.
How do you price your services?
I use flat-rate pricing, based on service type. I offer a free sample edit per project, and first-time clients receive a discount!
What's your editing philosophy?
I believe in preserving your unique voice while ensuring your work is grammatically correct and easily consumable for readers. Every suggestion I make is aimed at enhancing your story's impact without changing what makes your writing special.
